Week 1

Week 1 went pretty well. The course I am taking is called “Information Technologies for Strategic Management.” It sounds like a really intense course, but it is really just a summary course of how information systems are used in business and what systems are needed to effectively run a business. Normally the first day of class is just an intro where the professor goes over the syllabus and then everyone goes home. That is not the case in a cohort program…we stayed for 3 and half hours and were then let out a little early.

Before the first day of class we had to have two chapters read. The chapters were very broad and just covered information systems in general. We were also given our assignments for the semester. I have to do some group work, a paper, a midterm and a final…all in 5 weeks. It should be interesting. For those that don’t know, I struggled a little in undergrad until I finally found my place in the business school. Let’s hope that I get off to a good start in grad school.

MSIS Cohort

Well…I have decided to start another blog. If you aren’t familiar with my other one, you can check it out here: More Than We Can Chew. It is a blog about all the projects that my wife Leigh and I seem to take on. We have a lot of unfinished work around the house as you can tell.

This new blog will follow my adventures though graduate school. In case you aren’t aware, I am working towards my Master of Science in Information systems at UT Arlington. My undergrad was in Marketing from UTA, so this is a little change of pace. The MSIS program is a cohort program that will last 16 months. I am considered a full time student and will complete 33 hours of course work during that time. Each class lasts 5 weeks, so it is like taking summer classes year round. This is also the first time this program has been offered at UTA, so I will be part of the first graduating class.
